All Ages, Abilities & Breeds *Not appropriate for aggressive dogs* Goals: 1. Dog will respond to the handler's cues to sit, lay down, and stay in either a sit or a down position. 2. Dog will allow a friendly stranger to touch it while it is out with its handler Exercises: Sit and Down on Cue/Staying in Place: Evaluator will ask handler to show that the dog can sit on cue, then down on cue, then stay while the handler walks to the end of the 20-ft line attached to their dog's collar/harness, returns immediately and waits for the Evaluator to give the okay to release the dog. Sitting Politely For Petting: With the dog sitting at the handler's side to start, the Evaluator approaches and asks, "May I pet your dog?" The Evaluator pets the dog on the head and body. Handler may talk to and praise the dog throughout the exercise. After petting the dog, the Evaluator will back away to begin the next test item. Requirements for CGC Title Testing (if you decide to test): Sit and Down on Cue/Staying in Place: Dog is on a 20-ft leash for safety. Handlers may not use force to put their dogs into either position, dogs may stand or change position in their stay but may not start walking forward to the handler. Dogs who do not sit or down after a reasonable period of time (2 or 3 cues) will need more training before testing again. Sitting Politely For Petting: Dog must not show signs of shyness or resentment. The dog may stand to receive petting once the Evaluator starts petting the dog. The dog may move slightly forward to receive petting but should not lunge at, rush or jump on the Evaluator. The dog can appear happy and wiggly as long as it appears to be under control throughout the exercise. The dog should not struggle to avoid or pull towards the stranger.
